Black Cohosh, Actaea racemosa, in full flower. This is an At-Risk plant as noted by United Plant Savers and one to be propagated and used only from sustainable sources. The beauty of this plant is other worldly. The plant is called bugbane due to its unique scent, but it's one we cannot ever smell enough. We are working to propagate this plant in the Earth at Persimmon North for rewilding and Persimmon South for rewilding and eventual sale.
We are so excited to Forest Farm at Persimmon South! What is forest farming? It's a long term practice on private lands for promoting biodiversity and planting back native medicinal plants that have been overharvested in wild lands. We have already sowed our fist seeds including black cohosh, blue cohosh and goldenseal. Many of these native medicinals take many, many years to set seeds and so sustainable growing is necessary for the survival of these plants in the future. Spending time with these wise plants and planting them back to where they once were is a humbling act. We recognize that we have much to learn and much to share. We will do both. Forest farming these special plants will increase biodiversity in the forest and will eventually allow us the opportunity to offer plants and roots to other humans also interested conservation, preservation and sustainability.
Forest farming is gaining recognition in the world of government agencies and is supported and promoted strongly by plant organizations recognizing the depletion of these plants from their native habitats. Here are some current excellent resources:
